Ukraine: At the Heart of Conflict
With over twelve years of expertise in war medicine gained in Syria, Mehad quickly mobilized to apply its skills in support of those affected when the conflict erupted in Ukraine in 2022.
Mehad has developed programs to train local healthcare professionals in war medicine and enhance emergency response capabilities across Ukraine.
For three years, our training programs, supported by local authorities, offered sessions on first aid, war medicine, emergency obstetrics, protection against chemical weapons, and much more in the regions of Kharkiv, Odessa, Poltava, and Sumy.
Currently, Mehad is focused on the rehabilitation project for war victims in Ukraine, offering a comprehensive physical recovery program as well as psychosocial support to help them overcome trauma and improve their quality of life.
Rehabilitation Centers
Amputees and other war-injured patients receive comprehensive care at our two rehabilitation centers in Vinnytsia and Kyiv, which includes physical recovery, psychological support, and social assistance.

These facilities, with a combined capacity of 73 patients per day, provide targeted care to support both physical and mental recovery.
Key objectives of the project are to help injured individuals regain physical mobility, improve their quality of life, offer trauma-related psychological support, and provide social assistance to foster self-esteem and reintegration.
In response to the long-term needs of Ukraine’s healthcare system, Mehad brings its expertise in patient rehabilitation to help individuals fully recover.
This rehabilitation initiative is a vital step toward the physical and psychological rebuilding of those affected by the conflict in Ukraine.
Training Centers and Mobile Training Teams in Ukraine (2022-2025)
At Mehad, we believe that access to training and building local capacity are essential for rehabilitating the healthcare system in Ukraine.
Training programs in war medicine were set up and developed in collaboration with international and Ukrainian experts. The trained healthcare workers benefited from modern equipment and optimal supervision.

Initially offered at two centers in Lviv and Kharkiv, the training was subsequently provided by mobile teams, in agreement with medical centers and hospitals, in order to best adapt to the unstable security conditions in the area.
These training courses, which were then delivered in the regions of Kharkiv, Odessa, Poltava, and Sumy, aimed to train Ukrainian healthcare workers so that they could then train their colleagues themselves.
The courses covered various aspects of war medicine, such as protection against chemical weapons, advanced first aid, and pain management.
Additionally, we have established physiotherapy training units for pediatric care teams in Kyiv and Vinnytsia, enhancing local expertise in treating young patients.
Our impact
73 patients per day welcomed in our two rehabilitation centers.
12 training courses (first aid, war medicine, emergency obstetrics, etc.)
5,286 healthcare workers trained over three years through our training program.

Oleksandr: Healing Body and Soul
When I first arrived, I couldn’t move my arm or handle objects properly,” shares Oleksandr, a patient under Mehad’s care who was injured in a missile strike. “The therapists have done everything they could to help me regain full use of my arm quickly,” he explains. “This includes massages, electrical stimulation, and a range of physical exercises, like arm stretching.”
Larysa, the psychologist, also helped me work through my negative thoughts, and the social worker was there to support me right from the moment I was admitted to the rehabilitation center.
