Ukraine: At the Heart of Conflict
With over twelve years of expertise in war medicine gained in Syria, Mehad quickly mobilized to apply its skills in support of those affected when the conflict erupted in Ukraine in 2022.
Mehad has developed programs to train local healthcare professionals in war medicine and enhance emergency response capabilities across Ukraine.
Supported by local authorities in the regions of Kharkiv, Odessa, Poltava, and Sumy, our training sessions cover critical topics, including first aid, war medicine, emergency obstetrics, and protection against chemical weapons.
Mehad has also launched a rehabilitation project for war victims in Ukraine, offering a comprehensive program for physical recovery along with psychosocial support to help individuals heal from trauma and enhance their quality of life.
Training Centers and Mobile Training Teams in Ukraine
At Mehad, we believe that access to training and building local capacity are essential for rehabilitating the healthcare system in Ukraine.
Our teams provide specialized training in war medicine, developed in collaboration with international and Ukrainian experts. These programs use advanced equipment and benefit from expert supervision.
Initially offered at two centers in Lviv and Kharkiv, training sessions are now delivered by mobile teams working alongside medical centers and hospitals to better adapt to the area’s unstable security conditions.
The aim is to equip Ukrainian healthcare providers with the skills to train their colleagues in turn.
Courses cover essential topics in war medicine, including chemical weapon protection, advanced first aid, and pain management. Trainings are conducted across the Kharkiv, Odessa, Poltava, and Sumy regions.
Additionally, we have established physiotherapy training units for pediatric care teams in Kyiv and Vinnytsia, enhancing local expertise in treating young patients.
Rehabilitation Centers
Amputees and other war-injured patients receive comprehensive care at our two rehabilitation centers in Vinnytsia and Kyiv, which includes physical recovery, psychological support, and social assistance.
These facilities, with a combined capacity of 73 patients per day, provide targeted care to support both physical and mental recovery.
Key objectives of the project are to help injured individuals regain physical mobility, improve their quality of life, offer trauma-related psychological support, and provide social assistance to foster self-esteem and reintegration.
In response to the long-term needs of Ukraine’s healthcare system, Mehad brings its expertise in patient rehabilitation to help individuals fully recover.
This rehabilitation initiative is a vital step toward the physical and psychological rebuilding of those affected by the conflict in Ukraine.
Our impact
73 patients per day welcomed in our two rehabilitation centers.
210 to 530 healthcare providers trained per month.
12 training courses (first aid, war medicine, emergency obstetrics, etc.)

Oleksandr: Healing Body and Soul
When I first arrived, I couldn’t move my arm or handle objects properly,” shares Oleksandr, a patient under Mehad’s care who was injured in a missile strike. “The therapists have done everything they could to help me regain full use of my arm quickly,” he explains. “This includes massages, electrical stimulation, and a range of physical exercises, like arm stretching.”
Larysa, the psychologist, also helped me work through my negative thoughts, and the social worker was there to support me right from the moment I was admitted to the rehabilitation center.
