Protect and Support in Times of Conflict
Humanitarian crises severely impact human rights and worsen existing social issues. The lack of economic opportunities, access to basic necessities, security, and stability prevents conflict-affected populations from living with dignity. Moreover, the most vulnerable groups are especially at risk of becoming victims of human rights abuses, including forced marriages, discrimination, sexual assault, gender-based violence, and torture. Therefore, it is crucial for Mehad to implement protective measures that support these populations and ensure their fundamental rights are upheld.
These rights include:
- The right to live with dignity
- The right to receive humanitarian assistance
- The right to protection and security

Protection Centers to Support the Most Vulnerable Groups
Mehad has established two protection centers in Syria: one dedicated to young girls and women, and the other for young boys and men. These centers function as shelters and support hubs aimed at preventing and responding to gender-based violence. Trained advisors are available in each facility, allowing individuals to report incidents of violence and receive guidance on accessing the appropriate healthcare services.
The three most reported types of violence to our teams are:
- Psychological and emotional abuse
- Physical assaults
- Denial of legitimate access to economic resources or livelihood.
To support these protection missions, our teams receive specific training in:
- Psychological first aid
- Case management in child protection
- Family tracing and reunification
- Parenting skills
- Basic principles of combatting gender-based violence
- Stress management strategies
- Management of women’s spaces
- Communication and group facilitation
Mehad is also dedicated to raising awareness about gender-based violence and aims to educate communities about its consequences while promoting gender equality. The organization believes that medical, social, and cultural development is essential for building resilient and equitable societies, and its commitment to raising awareness reflects its desire to address deeply rooted issues and foster positive change within the communities it supports. Our Perspectives to Ongoing Support Actions
Mehad will continue its support programs for victims of gender-based violence and their families for as long as necessary to prevent such behaviors. Looking ahead, Mehad intends to invest more resources in the fight against gender-based violence and inequality. It is crucial to uphold the rights and dignity of women, whether they are patients or health and humanitarian workers.
We are also working to ensure that NGOs operating in Syria align their human resource management practices to promote the well-being of all, particularly regarding the right to decent maternity leave. Additionally, Mehad aims to create a platform for dialogue among NGOs active in Syria to collaborate on developing policies that prevent gender-based discrimination and inequality.
Sara, train to protect
Mehad regularly conducts training sessions for midwives. “Prenatal and postnatal care, as well as the management of postpartum hemorrhage, are just a few of the many topics we cover,” explains Sara, a midwife trainer. “We also provide training on how to care for victims of sexual violence, including rape. These sessions are essential for improving interactions and support for these individuals.
