Mehad launches its plan to re-equip Syrian hospitals. The operating theatre at the Deir-Ez-Zor national hospital was the first to be refurbished in August, followed in a few days’ time by at the Al Mouwassat university hospital in Damascus.
The NGO Mehad is continuing its efforts to support the Syrian healthcare system, which has been severely weakened by more than a decade of conflict. In mid-August, a consignment of specialist surgical equipment was handed over to thenational hospital in Deir-Ez-Zor, one of the most important facilities in the east of the country.
This delivery includes ENT, ophthalmology and orthopaedic surgery tools, as well as modernurological endoscopy equipment. This equipment will enhance the hospital’s ability to provide specialist care to thousands of patients in the city and surrounding areas.
Deir Ez-Zor, a city ravaged by war
Located on the banks of the Euphrates River, Deir Ez-Zor has been one of the towns hardest hit by the war in Syria. Successive bouts of fighting, massive destruction and the prolonged isolation of the region have seriously weakened its infrastructure, particularly its health facilities. Even today, the inhabitants suffer from limited access to healthcare and the difficulty of health establishments to meet the ever-increasing demand.
In this context, the national hospital in Deir Ezzor remains a vital pillar, serving tens of thousands of people. Strengthening its capacity is an essential step towards improving the quality of care and restoring hope to local communities.
A new delivery planned for Damascus
In line with these efforts, Mehad plans to delivera second batch of radiology equipment in the next few days to the Al Mouwassat University Hospital in Damascus, one of the country’s largest hospitals, providing 1,400 medical services a day.
This donation is part of a wider strategy to support a number of health establishments in Syria, in order to meet the most urgent needs and support medical staff in their work.
