Mahmoud’s journey from suffering to recovery: Integrated care from diagnosis to recovery.
Ten-month-old Mahmoud arrived at Alkarama Primary Health Care Centre with diarrhoea, and although his symptoms were mild, initial tests showed that he was on the verge of malnutrition.
After being referred to the nutrition clinic, Mahmoud weighed only 7kg, was 65cm tall and had a mid-arm circumference of only 13cm, confirming that he was at risk of severe malnutrition and required urgent intervention.
The medical team responded quickly with an integrated treatment plan that started with diarrhoea treatment, followed by support with essential nutrients and vitamins. His mother was also provided with health education and awareness sessions on the importance of complementary feeding and preparing nutritious meals in safe ways, to ensure continued recovery at home.
Aisha, a nutrition technician at the centre, said: “In Mahmoud’s case, recovery is not only dependent on drug treatment, but also requires continuous follow-up and education, and this is what we work on daily to ensure the improvement of the case.”
Today, Mahmoud continues his treatment journey with the continued support and care of the medical team at Alkarama Centre, to ensure his full recovery and well-being.
