Mehad on the ground in Syria

7 November 2025

Mehad’s Chairman and General Secretary were in Syria on a mission combining scientific participation and action in the field. After attending the 1st European Congress in Damascus, they continued their trip to strengthen local medical capacities and provide practical support to the most vulnerable populations.

In Damascus, an entire day was devoted to the operating theatre at the university hospital, where children with disabilities received dental care and operations, with anaesthesia fully covered. Mehad also took part in the scientific conference, stressing the importance of sharing knowledge to improve local practices. The Chairman and the Secretary General also supported hospital staff by donating an ultrasound machine to Al-Mouwassat University Hospital on Mehad’s behalf, thereby boosting the resources available to patients. This machine was entirely financed thanks to the generosity of our donors: thank you, thank you!

In the Deir ez-Zor region, Mehad explored the needs of local communities in Muhsen by visiting the health centre. The aim was to identify priorities for supporting vital sectors, improving services and guaranteeing continuity of care. A meeting with the Health Department and a visit to the hospital enabled him to assess the needs of the operating theatres and health infrastructure, while defining mechanisms to strengthen the operation of the health centres and extend the range of services offered to the inhabitants of the rural region.

As part of this fieldwork, Mehad has signed the fifth phase of theProvision of healthcare services in the governorate of Deir ez-Zor project with the SRTF. This phase will enable more than 113,000 patients to be served directly, through :

  • the operation of two primary care centres and a mobile clinic,
  • the operation of two dialysis centres,
  • Support for five health centres with stocks of essential medicines.

The services offered cover maternal and child care, prevention and treatment of communicable and non-communicable diseases, mental health, nutrition and laboratory analyses.
