Syria faces the unimaginable: a devastating incident near Idleb

27 September 2023

At a time when all the signs are that the situation in Syria can’t get any worse, the terrible news keeps coming, and when humanity is put to the test, solidarity takes on its full meaning. On Sunday 25 September, a devastating incident took place near the Syrian town of Idleb, leaving a displaced community in mourning and need.

The Syrian regime bombed a camp for displaced people, causing the tragic loss of an old man and his innocent child, and seriously injuring another innocent soul. The pain and grief are indescribable. No one can remain indifferent to these poignant images of such a dark and sad day.

Understanding what is at stake in this incident

It is essential to take a step back and understand the challenges facing the people displaced in Syria as a result of this incident. What is happening here is much more than tragic; it highlights the difficult realities faced by people living in the camps.

First of all, it is important to note that IDP camps are vulnerable places, without the basic protection that solid buildings can offer. These spaces often have no walls, leaving residents exposed in the event of an attack.

Another delicate aspect is the overcrowding in these camps, where families find themselves sharing already limited space. This overcrowding only increases the risks in the event of conflict. What’s more, the lack of relocation camps means that many displaced people have no other option.

All this reminds us that the humanitarian needs in Syria are urgent. It is crucial that the international community steps up its efforts to protect vulnerable civilians and offer a little hope to those who have lost everything.
