Following the appointment of the new Syrian government after 14 years of war, the members of Mehad’s Board of Directors travelled to Syria. Despite the hope brought by this political change, the humanitarian situation remains worrying. It was therefore essential for the members of Mehad to travel to Damascus to discuss with the authorities, and more particularly with the Minister of Health, in order to lay the foundations for wider cooperation and to consider concrete solutions for rebuilding a viable healthcare system accessible to all.
Towards wider action throughout Syria
For years, Mehad has been working alongside local healthcare professionals to guarantee access to healthcare in the areas worst affected by the conflict, particularly in Syria, a country where the NGO has a long history of involvement. During the discussion with the Health Minister, he gave an alarming overview of the situation: a Syrian healthcare system that has been almost totally destroyed, infrastructures in ruins, centres targeted by attacks, a lack of investment and a shortage of equipment and staff.
Faced with this situation, Mehad’s aim is to identify health priorities, strengthen the capacity of existing structures and coordinate actions to provide effective care for the most vulnerable populations, drawing on his experience in Syria to extend his action throughout the country.
An essential step for the future
This dialogue with the health authorities represents a significant step forward for Mehad. It demonstrates a shared commitment to rebuilding a stable and sustainable healthcare system that serves all Syrians. As the country embarks on a delicate transition, Mehad remains determined to pursue its commitment by adapting to the new challenges.
