Earthquake relief: distributions begin

13 February 2023

After the shock of the terrible earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the death toll is high. With more than 30,000 dead, including 3,574 in Syria, our teams began distributing aid to those affected the very next day. We visited camps in the Idleb region to provide emergency food aid to several hundred families.

In the village of Jindires, the hardest hit by the earthquake, the survivors are destitute after the horror. We have given families a cold weather kit with blankets to help them survive the icy winter, when temperatures reached -4°C during the earthquake. We have deployed two new mobile clinics to reinforce our front-line health centres providing primary health care and psychological support. Much remains to be done, and we still need your help. Your help is crucial!

“The earthquake struck at 4am. It was a terrifying moment. We all ran outside. Some were dressed, others not. Today, we have nothing left and need everything. There are a lot of us in these makeshift camps after fleeing the earthquake. We are crammed together in tents. It’s unbearable. Thanks to NGOs like Mehad, we have been able to receive food baskets, sanitary protection and milk, so that we are not completely destitute. We need help.” Hiyam Ahmad Al Akl, displaced person from the town of Kafranbel in the Idleb region

Our emergency response:

  • With 350 euros: Shelter for a family of 4. Provision of tents, heating equipment, blankets and a food basket for a week.
  • With 200 euros: Renewal of our mobile clinics for earthquake survivors. One day of consultations in our mobile clinics, which criss-cross the Idleb region, the hardest hit by the earthquake.
