Rehabilitating devastated Syrian villages: Mehad at the heart of reconstruction

18 December 2023

The devastating earthquake that struck Syria last February left behind a landscape of unprecedented destruction, hitting hard at the lives of millions of Syrians already tested by twelve years of conflict. In the midst of this tragedy, Mehad mobilised to provide an urgent and significant response, focusing on the rehabilitation of the villages hardest hit.

The emergency situation and the areas worst affected

The figures speak for themselves: more than 5,791 lives lost, 10,041 people injured, and millions deprived of their homes, drinking water and basic services.

The earthquake hit several towns and villages, triggering a major humanitarian crisis in already fragile regions.

Our action on the ground

Mehad, in coordination with local councils, undertook a rehabilitation project targeting the worst affected areas, in particular the villages of Jisr al-Shughur in the city of Idleb inhabited by a Christian minority. The project involved providing financial assistance to the residents of Al-Yaqoubiya, Al-Jadeeda, Al-Qunya and Al-Malnad to rebuild their damaged homes.

A total of 90 beneficiaries were identified, and a committee of engineers on site completed a detailed assessment of the homes. This transparent method ensures that each beneficiary receives aid commensurate with the extent of the damage they have suffered.

A call for international solidarity

The situation in Syria remains critical, with millions of people facing urgent needs. Mehad is stepping up its efforts to provide an effective and principled humanitarian response. Every gesture counts in rebuilding the lives shattered by these successive disasters.

I GIVE, I HEAL
