Since July 2024, Mehad has been supporting Lawdar Hospital, with the support of the Crisis and Support Centre of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, one of the few remaining medical facilities in this region of Yemen. This hospital plays a crucial role in meeting the health needs of a vulnerable local population, against a backdrop of a severe deterioration in the humanitarian situation and persistent political tensions. Every month, the hospital welcomes a growing number of patients, while Mehad does his utmost to guarantee quality care despite the logistical and security challenges.
A hospital under pressure: growing medical needs
Lawdar hospital is under considerable pressure due to the closure of neighbouring health centres following the abrupt end of US support. As a result, the influx of patients has increased considerably. Every month, more than 6,000 consultations are carried out, testifying to the enormous demand for medical services in the region. In addition, more than 1,200 surgical procedures are carried out every month, covering a range of essential treatments for the population. This intense workload underlines the importance of the hospital as a last resort for many Yemenis in the area.
Responding to humanitarian challenges
As well as providing consultations and surgery, the Lawdar hospital plays a vital role in the fight against malnutrition. Every month, around 45 children suffering from malnutrition receive specialist care, an absolute priority in this humanitarian crisis. In addition, the hospital carries out more than 1,000 medical imaging examinations every month, including X-rays and ultrasounds, to diagnose and treat various pathologies. These services are crucial to providing comprehensive care tailored to the needs of the population.
Mehad remains fully committed to supporting this hospital by strengthening its infrastructure and training local medical staff. Despite the growing challenges, the NGO is continuing its mission to guarantee access to healthcare.
