Behind every face, a story of resilience: building the future in Syria and in all conflict zones

16 December 2024

At Mehad, the end of the year is an opportunity to highlight the essential work carried out by our healthcare professionals in conflict zones, and to pay tribute to those who work every day to overcome the hardships imposed by war. Behind every face is a story of resilience. Of reconstruction.

Mervat is a doctor at the Lawdar hospital in Yemen, where Mehad supports the training of local healthcare professionals. Through this programme, Mervat and other healthcare professionals are strengthening their skills to provide sustainable care in a region where the healthcare system has been deeply affected. The aim is to enable local healthcare workers to take charge of their populations in an autonomous and sustainable way, in order to provide accessible and appropriate healthcare services.

Ruslan was amputated after stepping on a mine in Ukraine. Today, he benefits from our rehabilitation programme for war wounded. This programme provides medical and psychological support to help them regain their mobility and independence.

Hamza, aged 11, is a young Syrian whose life has been scarred by the trauma of war. Thanks to Mehad’s mental health care programme, Hamza has been able to deal not only with his physical trauma, but also with his psychological trauma, helping to build his emotional resilience.

A difficult humanitarian situation

At a time of uncertainty about the outcome of conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, and more recently in Syria, where a new era is opening up between hope and uncertainty, the humanitarian situation remains particularly difficult. Nearly 17 million women, men and children are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance in Syria, and around 1 million people are internally displaced. In this context, where institutional funding is dependent on political issues and budgetary choices, your help is truly essential if we are to continue to act.

Support Mehad’s action

In 2023, thanks to the commitment of our partners and donors, Mehad was able to help more than 933,000 people in conflict zones.

At Mehad, we firmly believe that true resilience is built on the ground, in partnership with local stakeholders. By building the capacity of local healthcare providers and supporting existing healthcare infrastructures, we can ensure an effective, sustainable response that is tailored to the needs of the local population.

The testimonies of Ruslan, Mervat and Hamza are concrete examples of this reconstruction process. By supporting Mehad, you are helping to ensure the sustainability of local healthcare solutions and to rebuild healthcare systems in the regions affected by the conflict.
