In the wake of ongoing challenges in Northwest Syria, Mehad is working thoroughly to increase access to essential primary healthcare services, particularly for women and children. As part of our Earthquake Emergency Health Response, Phase 2, we are improving healthcare availability and affordability, with a focus on integrating sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and nutrition services at two key facilities: Kaljibrin Primary Health Care (PHC) center and Muhamble Basic Emergency Obstetric Care (BEmOC) center.

This 12-month project, which began in August 2023 and runs through December 2024, is aimed at enhancing access to quality reproductive health (RH), pediatric, and nutrition services in the communities of Mahambel and Kaljibrin. Our teams are working around the clock, with the RH team at the BEmOC center operating 24/7. We are committed to reaching 27,775 beneficiaries, including 10,251 children and 17,522 adults.

Key activities at the BEmOC center in Mahambel and the PHC center in Kaljibrin include:

  • Providing medical consultations (outpatient department) for pediatrics, SRH, non-communicable diseases (NCD), and emergencies.
  • Ensuring safe deliveries under the supervision of qualified professionals at the Mahambel BEmOC center.
  • Referring cases in need of specialized care to higher-level health facilities.
  • Screening for malnutrition in children under five and pregnant/lactating women (PLWs).
  • Offering daily counseling on infant and young child feeding (IYCF) for caregivers of infants and children under two years old.
  • Conducting community outreach, including key messaging, follow-ups, awareness campaigns, and group education in camps and local communities.
  • Strengthening the capacity of healthcare staff through training on Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM), IYCF, and SRH protocols.

This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to improving healthcare services and outcomes for vulnerable populations in Northwest Syria. Stay tuned for further updates as we continue our efforts to deliver lifesaving care.
