Petition – Syria in silence: stop the international community’s indifference!

11 June 2024

In 2024, the humanitarian situation in Syria is the worst since the start of the conflict in 2011. More than 13 years of war have left the country in ruins, with devastating consequences for its population. In the face of these immense needs, the response from international donors is clearly inadequate, with only 6% of requirements covered for 2024. Mehad has launched a petition to denounce this indifference on the part of the international community, which has already been signed by more than 4,795 people.

The latest figures from OCHA (the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) highlight the dramatic situation currently facing Syrians:

Refugees and internally displaced persons: more than 2 million Syrians are living in refugee camps, often in appalling conditions. These camps are overcrowded and under-supplied, with a lack of drinking water, food and medical care.

Food insecurity: around 3.6 million Syrians suffer from food insecurity. With the funds available, only 625,000 of them could be helped to avoid starvation.

Access to healthcare: Syria’s healthcare system is in ruins. Nearly 160 health establishments, including 46 hospitals, risk suspending their operations between now and June due to a lack of funding.

The indifference of the international community

Despite the scale of the crisis, the international community remains largely indifferent. In 2024, humanitarian funding for Syria was alarmingly low: only 6% of the $4.07 billion needed had been received.

This chronic lack of funds has serious consequences. Insufficient funding is forcing humanitarian actors to scale back their programmes, leaving millions of people without essential assistance.

Our petition: act to break the silence

Faced with this situation, Mehad is calling for urgent action from the international community. Our NGO has launched a petition to demand concrete and immediate action: increase funding for humanitarian aid, guarantee unhindered access for humanitarian workers, and mobilise world public opinion to put pressure on political decision-makers.
