Six months after the devastating earthquake in Syria and Turkey: courage and resilience at the heart of humanitarian action

18 August 2023

It is with great solemnity that we mark the sixth month since the terrible earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey in February 2023. The damage caused by this natural disaster was devastating, affecting thousands of lives and displacing entire communities.

In the heart of these devastated regions, the tragedy has left its mark, with loss of life, massive destruction and profound suffering. Rebuilding communities and aspiring to a better future are the pillars of humanitarian action, while this commitment to solidarity becomes the key to making the resilience of survivors a dynamic force for the rebirth of these battered territories.

Immediate and lasting support for communities

Since the day of the disaster, Mehad has mobilised with unwavering determination to provide vital aid to the survivors. Mehad is working closely with other humanitarian organisations and volunteers to provide emergency assistance and help rebuild the affected areas. Six months on, and although there is still a long way to go, the progress made is remarkable.

Our commitment to the affected communities in Syria remains strong. With more than 14,460 beneficiaries, this figure bears witness to the positive impact of our action. From emergency relief to psychosocial support and reconstruction, each person helped represents a victory for humanity and a step towards a brighter future for Syria.

Improving access to healthcare: our primary healthcare centres in Syria

As part of its ongoing humanitarian commitment, Mehad has set up five primary healthcare centres in north-west Syria. These centres play a crucial role in providing essential access to healthcare in areas severely affected by the tragedy of the earthquake. Every day, medical consultations are available to meet urgent needs, providing vital medical services to those who desperately need them.

These primary health centres are much more than medical facilities. They symbolise Mehad’s unwavering commitment to long-term reconstruction, ensuring that survivors have access to quality care despite the difficult circumstances. Each consultation is a step towards normality, a source of relief for vulnerable communities hoping to get back on their feet. To find out more

Call for continued solidarity

As we commemorate this sad anniversary, let us remember that the needs remain immense. Donations and continued support from the international community are vital to enable Mehad to continue his humanitarian work in Syria.

The earthquake has left behind unimaginable devastation, but it has also revealed an extraordinary strength within the Syrian population. Courage and resilience have become the pillars of our action. Despite the chaos and destruction, we have witnessed the unshakeable will of communities to pick themselves up, rebuild and heal, whether physically or emotionally.

Solidarity is our beacon of hope in the darkest of times. It transcends borders, uniting hearts and transforming individual resilience into collective strength. Every act of solidarity counts, and every step towards reconstruction is a step towards the rebirth of these battered regions.

In the face of these challenges, Mehad continues to move forward, guided by the desire to restore hope to Syria. Your support and your donation are the foundations of this renewal. Together, we can make a difference and breathe new life into these courageous communities.

Your donation, their future
